The Kyder-Hendry combination promised well. Both were unflurried and were playing shots well until Hendry was dismissed. Bradman hit three successive tours off Hammond, and with a four by Ryder off Tate this was the only bright patch.
Chapman missed Grimmett in 'the slips off Hammond, and it was about the only real chance. Otherwise it was just a procession of Australians from the stand to the wicket. Ironmonger’s wicket was_ scattered to the batsman’s utter surprise. The Australian innings closed just on the luncheon hour. INTEREST WANES. Interest waned- after luncheon until Hobbs was dismissed after fifteen minutes play Oxenham then replaced Gregory. There was some criticism because England followed instead of sendAustralia in, but the answer to that was that England was taking no chances but making the best of the wicket.
Mead, when two, had a narrow escape, Oldfield whipping off the bails a fraction too late. Grimmett’s bowlixm puzzled Mead, who made many scratchy strokes.
'Hie first hour yielded poo.r batting, Hobbs, Sutcliffe and Mead giving quiet displays. _The sky was overcast at three o’clock and threatening rain, and the _ light was poor. Bradman again distinguished himself all through. . Runs were obtained from singles mainly, Mead taking 50 minutes tor 15. The crowd was restless in consequence. Ironmonger’s bowling was extremely good throughout. For nine overs only ten runs were scored.
Sutcliffe skied an easy one in the slips just before tea. His runs took 100 minutes and included two fours. Hammond forced, matters after tea with a variety of strokes, two fours in succession to mid-off bringing applause from the crowd. Mead even enlivened play. The hundred took 128 minutes. There was a sprinkle of rain at 4.15 p.m. and the light -was failing. There were occasional lightning flashes with thunder, and the spectators were dispersing. Play was suspended at 4.47 p.m. and resumed at 5.35. The ground was somewhat dead after light showers, and sawdust had to -be used. Play was finally suspended at 5.45 without addition to the scores.
