SOUTH ROAD SUBWAY.
LEVEL CROSSING SUBSTITUTE,
WORK NEARING COMPLETION
An important stage in the work of eliminating what is regarded as one of the most dangerous level railway crossings in the province was reached' yesterday, when the final load of spoil was Jilted to bring the road surface to the new formation level on the subway which is to carry road traffic beneath the railway where the line intersects the Main South Road at Hawera. The first car to travel beneath the line was driven through the subway yesterday by the Hawera County Council engineer (Mr A. Muggeridge), under whose supervision the work on the subway has been carried out. Speaking with a “Hawera. Star” reporter this morning, Mr Muggeridge pointed out that considerable work has. yet to be done in giving the required incline to the banks of the cutting in addition to surface metalling, but it is expected that the subway will be available for general traffic by Christmas. The new formation is 'l3 chains long and 24 feet wide. At the intersection the road level will be eighteen feet below the railway line. Some idea of the extent of the work may be gleaned from the fact that the removal of approximately SOOQ cubic yards of spoil has been entailed. Commencing in October of last year, the work on the roadway was interrupted in February, pending the completion of the overhead line construction by the Railway Department, but lias been pushed ahead rapidly since the resumption after a delay of some nine months.
