HAWERA SCHOOL AFFAIRS

THE MONTH’S ACTIVITIES. The .ordinary monthly meeting of the Hawera School Committee was held last evening, when the following members were present: Messrs J. W. Harding (chairman), T. J. Salmon, P. O. Veafle, G. H. Wesitw r ood, F. C. Foden, M. R, Janes, and Dr. IV. M. Thomson. The headmaster, Mr F. A. Bates, repotted that the attendance at the. school for the month of November was 634 as against 628 for the previous' month. The average attendance for the month was 554, an improvement on -the previous month of 10. The proficiency examination was held on November 10. Most of .the pupils- were previously exempted on the headmaster’s recommendation, only doubtful ones -being examined. The naif-yearly tests ha.d now been .concluded and reports would bo completed -this week. A sports meeting was- held on November 22 for the purpose of selecting Dixon Banner representatives, and four teams were entered from the School.

Miss Valentine, school psychologist, spent three, days at the school examining children for the special arts aind crafts dais's to be commenced in Hawera, next year. Mr R'eed., instructor in woodwork, assisted in and worked with the .boys an the construction of shelves for the school library.

The teachers and scholars were at present energetically preparing for the fete on Wednesday, .19-th. lust. The 'school’s orchestra would leave an the 20th to play at Wellington an Friday, 2.lst, their concert being broadcast. The report of the visiting committee for the month of November was received, and it was decided to, carry Out several small works and alterations recommended in the report. Accounts amounting .to £9 2s fid were passed for payment.

Messrs T. J. Salmon and F. C. Foden were appointed the visiting committee for the month of December.
