—.—— "THE MIDNIGHT ROSE." OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. Lya. de Putti, Europe’s most exotic sltat, Tvi.il 'foe at the Haiwora Opera House, beginning .to-night, m ‘ ‘ Midnight Rase," a Universal picture. This is a thrilliing story of thel old Gold Coast of Sam Francisco, of a eaifo dancer and 1 a .reformed gangster, the former played by Miss De Putti, the latter by Kenneth Harlarn, Primitive passions against ia foaCkground Of degrading influences .makes this a powerful drama balanced with just the proper amount Of comedy. The story is smoothly almd grilppinigly told dm an ©nthralllin’g manner ■ foy Director James Young. It is from "Backwash," a story foy J. Grubb Alexander, a former newspaper man who covered the Goaid Coast boat some years ago and is said to foe perfect in atmosphere and action. The picture was made .at great expense with a colaurfml cast including "Gunboat" Smith and "Happy George’.’ Larkin, worldfamous pugilists, and other famous actors. An additional .attraction on this evening’s programme will foei Series No. 1 of H. C. Witwer's new two'-reel storiels, "The Pacemakers." These series are very much like "The Collegians’’ and should prove popular with local patrons. The supporting programme will'include two news reels and a comedy.
OPERA HOUSE WEDNESDAY. “ ‘ SUNRISE. ’ ’ Hailed foy critics as one of the most outstanding productions of 1928, ".Sunrise," which commences a three-might season at the Opera House Wednesday evening, is the talc of three simple lives which are involved in a, tremendous drama of conflicting emotions. The. picture was directed foy F. W. Murnau, whose previous work at the Germain U.F.A. studios stamped him as a producer of exceptional capabilities. "Sunrise" is the story of a mam, a farmer, tempted to murder his wife because he is in the toils' of a • city siren. He agrees to a plan foy which he will upset al lb oat with his wif e in it, but at the critical moment Ms conscience asserts itself and he rows her foaiek to shore. She flees from him in horror, going to the city. He follows., trying to .explain that his murderous intentions have been conquered. Finally, in a church, where she has ©ought relief, they become reconciled and spend the rest of the day in the city, on a second honeymoon. On their way home, again in the rowboat, a, storm comes up, and the boat is wrecked. The man reaches shore, in the morning, believing that his wife is dead, and foe is determined to kill the siren in revenge. But the wife is found and happiness comes with sunrise. Janet Gaynor, who was last seem in "'Seventh Heaven," appears as the wife, while George O’Brien avnd Margaret Livingston are the other principals in the cast.
