iVir Mackenzie moved a motion suggesting that each I J res bytery should appoint a temperance committee, recommending tne appointment of bands of nope and advising the reappoint ment of tne convenor of tne temperance committee as the representative of the •LTesbyteiians on ,the executive .of tbe New Zealand Alliance.
Dr. j. Gibb, Wellington, moved that the motion be added to % suggesting that the alliance should endeavour to secure restoration of tbe principles ot local option. “I believe,” he said, “that if we had held on to locall option we should by now have New Zealand dry.” ' • - - Mr J. Aitken, “Wanganui, deplored drinking among young people. It was a matter of common knowledge, he said, that some young people Avere drinking to a great extent.. “A .great many of our young women are taking cocktails and other kinds of liquor,” he added. “Along with the cocktail goes the cirgarette.” ' . Air Aitken appealed tq 'the ministers to give up smoking for the sake of the boys and girls. {several speakers criticised the, policy of the alliance, and an amendment. Avas moved deleting the proposal! to reappoint the convenor of the. temperance committee as the representative on the ‘ alliance. , .• The debate was adjourned.
