Excellent results -shown in a return of over £2O, attended the shop day appeal made at Hawera yesterday -on behalf of the High School Sports funds. Speaking with a “-Hawera Star” reporter this morning, iMr A. Gray, the headmaster of the school, expressed thanks due to .Mesdames Thomas, Whitehead, Findlater, Miss Garnett and their helpers at the stalls, to the many donorg of goods and to the public for the .generous patronage afforded. In the competitions conducted the -Christmas cake donated by Mrs W. W. Thomas was won by Mr J. W. Alexander (Tawliiti), whose estimate of the length ’Of string as 4yds -44 in, was nearest; to the correct length of 4yds sin. The Christmas cake donated by Mrs W. A. Guy was won by Mrs B. Harrison whose estimate of 305 as the number of sweets in the bottle shown was correct and the prize of a box of chocolates was secured by Miss A. Harding, who judged correctly the number, 160 of pins exhibited in a further bottle.

.At St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, last night there was a festival service for Anglican Choirs within the Archdeaconry, in which several choirs too-’-- part. The anthem sung ’■as “The Heavens Are Telling,” from TTpvden’s “Creation” while the uiticles were to a setting by Walmsley in B Hat. Ven. Archdeacon Evans was the preacher and the theme of his sermon was music in the churches.
