■Mr Thomas Fortune Ryan, a.g|ed 77, a we'll-known New York financier, has died. He leaves' an estate estimated at more than £60,000,000 in value.—Press Assn. Mr H. S. Gullet, Nationalist member for H,3iity (Victoria.) has been appointed! Minister for Trade and Customs in the Federal Government, states a Sydn'ey cable. John Barrymore and Delores Costello the screen stars, wen? married on Saturday, says a Los Angeles cable.
Mr V. Powell, who has been transferred from the Hawcra branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency to the Wanganui office, left to-day to take over his nebv appointment.
Mr R. Free, of Matapu, left to-day on a visit to Dunedin, where he is to attend the Masonic Grand Lodge conference.
Mr R. MeCay, of Hawcra, left on a visit to the South Island to-dav.
Messrs G. W. Rogers and J. Young, of Opunake, were passengers by this morning’s Express en route for Dunedin where they arc to attend the Masonic Grand Lodge conference. Mr. and Mns. H. A. Brunette, who since returning to Hawera after their visit to Australia have been staying at the Commercial Hotel, are leaving for Auckland to-morrow.
Mr. A. R. Goad, chief inspector of the Public Trust Office, arrived on- a visit to Hawera to-day He is staving at the Central Hotel.
Mr Fred Gawith* left for Dunedin today to attend Masonic Grand Lodge conference. He will also attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Astronomical .Society in Wellington on Friday. Mr T. A. Winks of Hawera left on a visit to. AVellington to-day. Mr and Mrs H. Crawford, of Palmerston North, are among the guests at the Commercial Hotel. Returning from a visit to the Auckland province, they arrived in Hawera yesterday, and will resume the journey to Palmerston North to-morrow.
An intoreting personality in the life of the community of Eltham ,Mr T. H. Jenkins, celebrated his 80th birthday on Saturday. He is a pioneer of nearly fifty, years and has seen the town grow from a bush settlement to its tine condition to-day. Air Jenkins is special,y known for his interest in the Salvation Army to which body he gave the fine Ironic on the Manga where Road some years ago. lie presented the land to the army and by the work of his own hands cut. the timber, carted it to. Till ham to be sawn, and deposited it or. the site for the carpenters to build the home. He built the home to the memory of his late wife Mercy Jenkins. “IMercy Home” 'is its name. The first soldier to be enrolled in the Army in Eltham was Thomas Hunt Jenkins and he took an active part in it for many years, until advancing years compelled him to relinquish activity in a work that is very near his heart. For his great goodness in the course of Christianity, he was created ‘* Envoy” a rank which he held for 22 years, and last Sunday retired, being presented with an illuminated certificate from headquarters, signed by the Commissioners. Mr Jenkins is still hale and hr artv and has received many messages of congratulation from old friends.
