HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL

WORK FOR THE MONTH. Tiie monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough council was held last night.llie Mayor (Mr. E. A. Paceyj presided. The loilowing were, present: Councillors A. Reid, \V. Butter, G. J. Uayley, J. -VL. Townsend, E. Morrissey, W. G. Simpson, and R. H. Leece. Apologies were receiied from Crs. W. G. Walk--ley and W. G. Strange.

REPORTS. The borough engineer reported that the flanks of Victoria Street from High Street to Nelson Street had been metalled on both sides. Kerbs and channels in Rowe Street had been constructed. The nre brigade had. attached and tested hydrants on Beach. Road.

A considerable quantity -of metal, shingle, and sand' bad been collected in readiness for the summer programme, and sun-dried shingle was beaig collected for the same purpose. The water pipe at the baths had been extended and a hydrant fixed.. Repair work on footpaths would commence at once.

The tesult of several tests made of weights of drums of bitumen showed that the council had been charged, for about three tons too much, representing about £2l. The bitumen company was taking the matter up with the R/aihvay Department. CRACKS IN PATHS.

There were portions of the footpaths in which cracks were so numerous that it would be best to- remove the perished tar macadam entirely and replace it with shingle mixed with bitumen and crude oil. In doing this it would be best to do from street to street entirely, so as to have no more patchwork. Fortunately, the road programme was light this year, and it was proposed to carry out as much path repair work as possible this summer. INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

The borough inspector reported that four eases of scarlet fever had been notified during the month Ten plumbing joos had been inspected and two drains tested and passed. Fifty premises had been inspected, the usual notices being sent to owners or occupiers. Eleven drivers’ licenses had been issued. Dog registration fees for the month totalled £l. LIBRARIAN’S REPORT.

The librarian reported that during the month 10 new members had joined and 14 quarterly members had left-. The present number of subscribers was 250. Fifty-two new books had been bought. FINANCE. The financial statement disclosed a general credit of £3304 ]2s Bd, water £1526 19s od, special rate (original area) £205 12s sd, power board £2 11s lOd, deposits £lO, against cemetery debit £36 7s lOd, hospital £9 5s sd, special rate (added area) £25 4s sd, outstanding cheques £6 18s, credit in the Bank of New Zealand £1687 Is Sd, amount in hand. £273 8s 9d, deposit in Post 'Office Savings Bank £3025 6s Sd—a. total credit balance of £4978 18s Bd.
