HIGH SCHOOL AFFAIRS
HAWERA BOABD OF GOVERNORS MONTHLY MEETING. Mcmber.s present at the ordinary meeting of the Hawera High School Board of Governors last, night were Mr. R. S. Sage (chairman), Mrs. J. W. Harding, Messrs. T. C. Hobbs, A. L. Jennings. A. Lees, J. Gray, W. Entwistle, J. W. Harding, and C. H. Bowman. Mr. A. Gray (headmaster) was in attendance. An apology was received from Mr. Arthur Brown. HEADMASTER’S REPORT.
In the course of his report the headmaster stated that the numbers on the 101 l were: Literary,, 110; commercial, 1)9 ; home science, 25 ; agriculture, 9; engineering, 33; a, grand total of 276.
During the month the following examination successes have been recorded City and Guilds of London: Mechanical engineering, division 1, grade 1, two; mechanical engineering, division 2, grade 1, five. Pitman’s shorthand: Third-class- elementary certificates 18, second-class theory certificates five, 60 woids per minute one, 80 words per minute two, 90 words' per minute six. The exhibit at the show was the he-st the school had; yet had, and he expressed appreciation of the work of those members of the staff who were responsible for the work. A report from Mr. Whitehead was submitted containing suggestions for dealing with the front lawn. The suggested plan for new home science wing at the school was given, in accordance with the original olan, and this would complete the school with the exception of the two classrooms joining up the blocks of buildings. He suggested that the department might be asked to complete ' the job by building the two rooms and also the laundry shown in the plan as for the future. Only those teachers' who had to- suffer the inconvenien''e of going to the old school Could appreciate what this wing would mean.
From now on to the end of the year examinations would take 1 up most of the time. P.S.E. and intermediate would begin on Tuesday, junior national scholarship examination on November 28. and matriculation and. university scholarship about December 3. On November 30 it was proposed to hold the hows’ snorts, and the girls’ sports would be held on the day following. On November 29 it was proposed to hold a shop day in town in aid of the school snorts fund.. Any contributions would lie eratefullv received. Mecfl.amesl W. IV. Thomas and H. G. Whitehead had kindlv consented to take charge of the shoo. It was not qenerallv re'OEmised that the school snorts expenses were nearly £lO9 a year.

After some discussion it. was resolved to hold 1 over in the meantime the question of improving the lawn. In regard to the suggested grant for sport® fund, it was agreed to give £2O and to request the committee to. prepare ai statement showing how the money was expended. The headmaster said that there l were big expenses, and it was a heavy responsibility, but the sports were helping to make the school. The pupils paid half fares. Tlie receipts included sub serin tion s £27, refunds expenses £44. Grants were made as required on the basis of £ for £ on amounts mid. Tn reply to the headmaster, it was agreed that there would be no objection to holding “estimating” competitions, as they were called by one of the members.
The Technical School Board in Nelson wrote protesting against an increase in fees for evening classes. The chairman said that the conference had opposed the increase, but the Department had seen fit to press for it.- A proposal was carried supporting the protest.
The question of salary for the conductor of the school band and orchestra was left to the chairman and the headmaster.
ACCIDENTS' TO PUPILS. ■ Advice was received from the Department to the effect that as the question of accidents to students, was a legal one, no opinion could be expressed. The chairman said that apparently members had had no experience of such cases.
Mr Harding said that it was most extraordinary that there was nothing in the Act governing such occurrences as an accident to a pupil and the chairman suggested that the Act should be amended to cover the position. It was agreed to secure a. legal opinion on the Sketch plans submitted for the home subject. BUILDING.
