THE SHOW.
LATE EDITION
OPENING DAY CONTINUATION OF PRIZE LIST There was a large attendance at the first day of the Egmont A. and P. Show to-day, when judging work was actively pursued. ’ Among the judges present was the veteran pig .breeder (Mr ,W. B. Grant, of New Plymouth) who complimented the committee on the general display. Excellent service was given in the dining rooms run by a ladies’ committee. Waiting at table were girls from the Hanvera High School and they did their job most efficiently. JUDGES’ REMARKS. JERSEYS. Good quality marked the entries in the Jersey section, and this met with most favourable notice by the large crowd and interested spectators. Speaking of the section the judge (Mr. R.. J. Linn) said he was. very much impressed with the female classes. He remarked specially on the yearling heifer class, and said it was one of the best lie had seen. The winner was a. great-bodied animal with fine spring of rib, good top line and heart room. Tihe cows, in milk were also a specially fine lot, all good, with several outstanding and showing breed and • performance ail through. The winning cow in milk, Mr. J. Pettigrew’s Jerseydale Trilby, was outstanding in type and quality, a true Jersey, with good muzzle and nice clean meek. He considered she w&s good enough to go to l any show in the Dominion and would be heard of again in the show ring. The aged cows were a class of typy animals, the winner being outstanding and generally better than the second in the top line. 'They were very close in other features. The Grade Jerseys tvere of great quality, typical dairy cows. The winner, though fourteen years old, was standing up to the work of milking exceedingly well and looked in the pink of condition. GRADE JERSEYS. The grade Jerseys made a strong class, stated the judge, Mr. R. J. Linn, and the entries would compare favourably with anything in New Zealand. AYSHIRES. A high class of animal throughout, said the judge (Mr, .0. B. Morgan, of Ngawapurua). He said he was much impressed with them. The champion bull was a fine animal and a good type, while the reserve was nearly equally good, but, being a much younger ani- , mal, bad hardly developed fully. He promised very well however. The cows were a good class. The yearlings also - were capital. The champion cow was ■ outstanding, fit to go to the Royal Show. Though not in milk, she beat the reserve cow which was in full milk. CLYDESDALES. Mr. O. E. Billinghurst, of Wanganui, who judged the Clydesdales, spoke very highly of the class of litorses shown. The champion mare, Messrs Moore Hunter Estate’s Sesame, was an outstanding type of animal, and one of the best in the Dominion. The same exhibitor’s gelding, Renger, was also a very fine horse and would do well wherever shown. The class for dry mares brought forward a small but very fine stamp of mare. SPRING GARTERS. Mr A. Lankow, of Manaia, winner of the spring carter championship for two years in success, the trophy now becomes his own property. “Buster,” the horse he won it with this year, being a particularly fine type of animal and would do well wherever shown, remarked tae judge, Mr [ C. E. Billinghurst. SHEEP. In the words of the judge, though competition in Romney Marsh classes was not strong, the exhibits were, on the whole, very good, and the majority of those shown in natural condition were more active than those which had undergone show preparation. Soutbdowns were also very good. The champion ram, shown by Messrs Ellis Brothers, of Bulls, is an outstanding animal, and would probably hold its own with any company of the same class in Naw Zealand. Mr A. A.Veriy (Waitotara) showed a ewe hogget in natural condition, which, though rather strong in wool, is nevertheless a beautiful sheep l . FAT SHEEP. The judge (Mr. Jeffcoate) was very enthusiastic over the fat lamb classes. He was highly delighted and said they were about the finest he had judged and that they were more even in quality and better than those he had judged in Palmerston .North and Hawke’s Bay.
