KAPONGA BAND CARNIVAL.
‘ ‘ BLUE ’ ’ CANDIDATE HONOURED. ,SUM OF £l2O RAISED. The -Kaponga [Municipal Band carnival reached finality last evening, when a free-for-all social and dance was held in the Town Half). Fully 80 couples occupied the floor and excellent dance music was supplied in turn by the Kaponga band, Auroa Pipe Band and Boulton’s orchestra. The duties uf iM’s.O. were carried out by Messrs W. Marr and E. Gibbons. The “popularity” contest between the “Green” and “Blue” candidates (Irene Guy and' Wilfred 'Shepherd respectively) excited much interest from the first announcement made at 10 p.m. by the scrutineers, Messrs R. E. McGregor and E. iL. Abbott., when the voting was slightly in favour of “Green” by 760 to 672. As the stall holders and competition organisers cashed in at intervals the vote favoured “Green” to 1560, when “Blue” was 200 down. At 10.20 “Blue’ 1 led bv 440 and steadiyl widened the gap until at 10.45, the closing point, when the totals stood at “Blue” 4812, “Green” 4159—a majority of 633.. 'The aggregate number of votes cash (8901) represented cash value, at 3d per vote, of £ll2 7 S 9d. The balance of receipts from stalls to credit of the band uniform fund was estimated to raise the total to £l2O.
On the declaration of the poll, Mrs A. V. Tait, general organiser of the carnival, presented each candidate with a silver cup of fac simile design, as mementos of the occasion. The cups were the gifts of the band, on whose behalf Conductor F. Kear expressed thanks to all who had assisted in conducting the carnival and the general public 'for attendance at the various functions organised. Messrs W. Marr and E..W. Blackwell, on behalf of the candidates and their committees, also returned thanks for support rendered. The presentation of blue and igreen kewpies to Mesdames J. Tattersall and J. iScanlon, convenors of the respective candidates’ committees, was made by Mrs 'Tait.
Various competitions conducted by stall holders during the evening were won as follows: Table centre, Miss IIEngland ('Lower Hutt); s et of jugs, Mr P. Nicol; cakes, Mrs .T. 11. Bent.lv and Mr R. B. iClcland; cushion, Miss 11. England; doll. Miss Doris Hislop; bed jacket, Mr Tom Taunt; embroidered apron, Mr R. E. Williams; afternoon tea set, Mr R. Fair (Wellington); trousseau, Miss M. O’Neill; scent, Mr P. Nicol; floating bowl, Miss Linda Davies; cushion, Mr Seaton Franklin (Cardiff). During the free supper recess, music for extra dances were played by Misses Myrtle Evans and Hickland. A feature of the - entertainment was provided by Miss Kitty Harper ('Stratford), who gave capital exhibitions of the “Military” and “La Poupe” dances in costume.
