SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Manaia school committee met on Wednesday evening. . Thero were present: Messrs. A. Gninim (chairman), \V. \ liiccntp J. T. Cla'g'ue, “1> A. Bridge, U. Edwards, G. Butler,; the itev.. Miller, Mrs. Gamlin and the headmaster (Mr. J. Nairn). Representations concerning the hour of commencing school in the morning were made by a deputation of six parents of pupils from Inaha, it being pointed dm that under the present summertime pupils had to leave school early to travel Dy the aiteruoon bus. It was decided tiiat umess a funner announcement was made school should open at 9 o’clock as from Monday. The headmaster’s report stated, inter alia, that the average attendance for October at the primary school was 242, the roll number being 273. As was usual during the last quarter of the vear the seooiithtry rool number had increased and was 22. ‘‘There is a possibility next year oi about 12 pupils with proficiency certificates from Okaiawa school joining the secondary department if suitable conveyance could be arranged. At. present W. Sherson, secondary assistant, was on leave to.enable him finish his degree in history and French. Mrs. Geddes was relieving. “Seven of our junior free place pupils have won their senior places on recommendation. Miss Edna Dak us has passed her D certificate' examination in all but one subject and is credited with a partial pass.' Miss Edna Nairn passed in Group I and 111 of teachers JD, and Master William i)akus passed in Group I of his D. These three studests, together with three others are candidates lor the matriculation examination next month. “In Standard VI proficiency examination on November 15, twenty-live pupils are entered. 1 have recommended that eleven out of the twenty-five should pass without examination. “The Dixon Banner sports are set down for December 12. Probably we shall get 20 to represent our school. Personally I favour sending them as. our representatives in charge of a teacher, ami keeping the balance at school as usual. The board’s staff of workmen began the new room to-day. It was decided that a holiday be granted for People’s Day at the Hawera. Show on November 15, and the headmaster’s suggestion concerning the Dixon Bauer sports was approved. Mr. Bridge, on behalf of the visiting committe, reported on matters arising from the usual inspection. The chairman and Mr. Cl ague were appointed the visiting committee for ■ the ensuing month. ; An offer received from a number of [ ladies lo arrange a shop day with a < view to assisting the annual picnic j fund was accepted. i
