LOCAL AND GENERAL.

At a meeting of the Hawera Savage Olub on Wednesday it was decided to arrange the annual Christmas . cheer concert for the purpose of providing comforts for the Old People’s Home and the Hawera. Hospital on December 14.

Early yesterday morning a terrific gale swept across BlufF harbour, causing a fair amount of damage to fishing and oyster boats moored at the wharves. The wind rose about 2 a.m. from west-north-west and soon attained gale force, stated an Invercargill message. Many of the vessels were, in danger of drifting on to the rocks ashore through the parting of mooring lines, but a watchman was aware of the danger and quickly got into communication with various owners. Most of the damage was done to fishing vessels, one boat’s stern being shattered. The weather improved considerably later in the morning. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Astronomical Society was held ,at the observatory, 15 Argyle Street, last evening. Mr. A. H. Larkman, A.M.1.M.E., presided over a good attendance of members. A paper entitled “As it was in the beginning” was read by the director, Mr. G. M. Townsend, F.R.A.S.. who gave a summarv of what men have thought and think now of the structure and evolution of the universe. At the conclusion of the reading of the paper the memers discussed various points of interest. ; Mr. Larkman thanked Mr. Townsend fop his / interesting and instructive paper, and proposed' a vote df thanks, which was carried' by acclamation.
