Recent visitors, to 'Mason’s Ray, Stewart Island, report that some time 'hiring the past three weeks the locality had been inundated by a tidai l , waive or a. series of them. Heavy logis which had 'ain on the beach for 20 years or more had been washed up about 3Qft above high-water mark, and in many cases carried up small creeks 1 to a greater distance. The seas had swept over the sand banlosi and changed! the appearance of the beach. In one .instance a smalt piece of ambergris, fresh fromi the sea, was picked up on top of a sandhill ,30ft above high-water mark.
