CRISIS IN CABINET
FRENCH CHURCH CONCESSIONS
ANTI-CLERICS’ OBJECTIONS COMBES STATUE ECHO. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) Received 2 p.m. to-day. PARIS, Oct. 31. Arising out of the trouble concerning tne erection of the statue of the former anti-clerical Premier, M. Emile Combes, a serious Cabinet crisis has developed, the solution of which is I requiring all M. Poincaire’s resolution. Articles seventy and seventy-one of the Budget propose to restore to the church confiscated property not yet distributed and concede religious associations engaged in teaching abroad the right to train missionaries in Fanee. The anti-clerical section of M. Poincaire’s party which is strongly represented in the Cabinet sharply protests against the scheme. M. Poincaire first suggested a compromise limiting the number of novitiates allowed to train. The Cabinet met twice to-day. but failed to resolve its differences of opinion. It is now suggested that M. Poincaire may withdraw the clauses from the Budget and modify and embody them in a separate Bill. It will be impossible to avert ministerial complications. [A message received from Paris on Monday stated that during the unveiling of a marble statue of M. Combes at Paris by M. Herriot a. band of young royalists rushed the police cordon and hammered off the nose and chin of the bust. During the struggle with the police one of the demonstrators was shot fatally and another was injured.]
