SHOPLIFTERS SENT TO PRISON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. A systematic course, of shop-lifting was revealed by Chief-Detective Ward in tlie Magistrate’s Court to-day when three married women (Annie Dean, aged 32; Adrienne Lindsay Ivershaw, aged 21; and Alary Weame, aged 45), came before Mr E. Page, S.M. Dean had to answer seven charges involving goods worth £54 15s Gel from shops and warehouses in Wellington and Christchurch; Kershaw one, and Weame three charges of theft and one of receiving. The magistrate said he was satisfied that they had acted in collusion with one another. Deane and Weame were sentenced to six months in gaol, and Kershaw to three months. CHARGES AGAINST POSTAL OFFICER. WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. At the Supreme Court, Thomas Houston, a postal supervisor, was charged with attempting to steal letters containing money addressed to a local firm, with stealing a postal packet containing IDs. He was also, charged with three counts of opening) the same postal packets. The jury, after several retirements, disagreed on all charges but that _of opening on© postal packet, on which they found the aocusedt guilty. A new trial was granted and the judge said be would later hear couneel’s application to set aside the verdict on the ground that it was not a postal packet.
