The havoc causedl by the floods in the east Godavari district on the Madras coast was related by villagers who were rescued to-day after having been marooned for nearly a week there, suffering terrible privations. Many were drowned, as well as hundreds of cattle and goats. Five hundred houses were washed away. The inhabitants' of Samalkot had lived since Monday on the roofs of houses and on trees. It had been impossible to supply food or to effect rescues owing to the powerful current. From' Tuni to Waltair the main Madras-Calcuttu railway, a distance of 80 miles, was obliterated. It will take months to reconstruct. Immense damage has been caused roads, buildings and rail bridges.
