TRAMP ALONG BEACH. KAUPOKONUI TO OTAKEHO. Under the able guidance of Mr. L. S. Mackie, of Otakeho, and with the interest heightened by t-lie- presence of Mr. M. R. Jones, o’f Hawera, members of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club had a- most enjoyable tramp- from Kaupokonui beach to the Otakeho River yesterday. Members of the Club were exceedingly fortunate in having such assistance, because Mr. Mackie is an acknowledged authority on botany and all formsi of nature study, while Mr. Jones has a'deep and wide knowledge of the history of the traditions of the Maori people. Together they were a-ble to make the tramp educational as well as interesting, for Mr. Mackie, besides discoursing on plant and seaweed growth and rare shells, was able to name all the natural features observed during the tramp —-river, bay, headland and rock, and Mr. Jones to give an explanation of the names, their origin and! liistory. Lunch at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Mackie at Otakeho was followed by a- ramble through the garden, which is filled with native plants, shrubs, and_ flowers, and then the bom-ewaid journey was made.
