O’Callaghan, has had extra work done on the greens, tees and approaches, so that when the tourney opened early on Saturday everything was in splendid order. The arangements for the tourney are very complete, and a marquee has been enacted lor the convenience ol competitions. Very good Suncheon and tea arrangements were also made._ In the qualifying hounds for the championship and the Fairfield Handicap there was keen competition. A number of special trophies had also been given, and these added to the interest in the play. The official starter. Mr W. 0. ‘Williams, had a. strenuous time, but did ■his work well. The first pair went off promptly on time, and thence onward every four minutes until nearly 3 o’clock another pair set out. In the Teams’ match, Eltham 'scored a good win from Hawera' A by four strokes.. Tire mi2'dai l-ound on the firyst day was won by Val-intine, with the excellent nett soar© of 70, his handicap being 16. J. there was a strong wind Vowing all day, and this militated against low scores, but under the circumstances the general stnadard of golf was good. In the eliminating rounds of the championship there were several surprises, when in the first H. P. Wills beat Phil Grey, and in the second G. Wills beat J. Qu)n .and Glasgow beat I. Saunders. H. P. Wills gave O’Callaghan a great run and led until the thirteenth hole. In the handicap Glasson did well, to beat first Lewes and then A. A. Stewart.

A sensational feat was performed in the match between Stephenson (Opumakfi) and Walkley, when playing ait the Cliff —they both got twos and halved the hole. It is an event that might never happen again. The greens and tees were the theme of much commendation by visiting players. The greens were true and fairly fast. The fairways, too, were In excellent order. Golfers generally were enthusiastic in their praise of the natural beauties of the course and several expressed the opinion that the course was one of which Hawera might be proud, and which, with, a gradiial -process of development would be as good as any on the coast.. Putting oompetiitions were held all the time, and many excellent cards were returned. The results were as below: — QUALIFYING ROUNDS. CHAMPIONSHIP.

Stephenson v. Glasson. N.Z- AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. HORTON BEATS J. BLACK. By defeating J, L. Black (Wellington by the narrow margin of one hole in a very hard-fought encounter, T. IF. Horton (Masterton) secured the amateur golf championship for the second time in his career, the previous occasion being at Shirley in 1925. The golf in the final was not quite up to that displayed in the semi-finals or in the third round, but both players' showed glimpses of their very best. The match was extremely well contested, no player ever having an advantage of more than two holes. It i was one of the best contested finals since the meeting -between A. D. S. Duncan and Jack Goss at Wanganui. At the end of the first eight holes Horton was two up, but Black, fighting sternly, wiped this off with a 4, 5, and 2, and was one up. So the fortunes varied, the margin being of the narrowest, and at the last hole • they were all square and Black had a long putt to halve the match. He just failed, and Horton won the championship for 1928, after one of the most strenuous encounters seen in a final.
