The New Zealand ami Australian Company's dividend for the year is 8 per cent. The disastrous effects of the long-drawn-out Argentine meat war, which lias settled in November, 1927, is shown in the balance-sr-ecet oi the Smithfield Argentine Meat Company. For the year ended December 31, 1927, the trading loss was £112.737, following a loss of £137,982 in the previous year.

The first death sentence since the restoration of the penalty was imposed at the Ponce sessions on the Communist Della Maggiora, who admitted that he came from France to shoot the Fascist mayor, who was absent, so he killed a tailor and a wine merchant. He said lie intended shooting Fascists till he was arrested. His accomplice. Spaclom, was sentenced to IS veurs’ iniprsionment. LONDON. Oct, 17.
A scheme has been proposed for reorganising the share loan capital of the William Beard more Company, -shipbuilders. It included the writing down of the 20s cumulative preference shares to 30s' and cancelling four years’ arrears of dividends, writing down 2s ordinary shares to Is. It is also proposed to issue various debenture stocks totalling £4--100,000 in order to meet claims of existing creditors. including the Treasury and the Wa.r Office.

A 8..A.F. pilot who was testing a new all-metal Bristol bulldog fighter at the Air Ministry’s testing station lost consciousness iu rarefied air at an altitude of five miles. The machine -lived at the speed of 300 miles per hour, but the airman regained consciousness and resumed control. The altimeter showed talit- the machine had dived three miles. LONDON. Oct, 17.
The Manchester branch of the Building Trades Union passed a resolution protesting against The Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill joining tlie union and demanding that the membership fee be returned, which is couivalcnt to’ expulsion. It also demanded the resignation of 31 r Hickson, the union’s general secretary. “for bringing the organisation into public contempt and ridicule.”
SAN LUIS (Pokosi), Oet. 17
Five insurgent leaders were executed upon special orders from Mexico' City. Tlie prisoners were betrayed by a comrade who, after being captured a., month ago. denounced the others. This, however, failed to save his life, for he was himself executed. The officer directing the firing squad blamed tbe clergy for fostering the insurrection.

Alicia. Cross and May Lee. represented by tlie same attorney, appeared in the'same court in the same hour and were granted divorces from. Leach Cross a former lightweight champion, and Harry Lee, a light contender, who fought Cross in Juno last year. From that nigh l ; neither husband had returned home. Both divorces were granted because of desertion.
RUGBY. Oct. 17. The police are nog- satisfied that only ono of the fourteen victims of 'the Gliarfiekl train smash remains unidentified by relatives and friends, while sixpeople who are missing have been established as having been on the train. All the injured are reported to be progressing as well as can be expected.

The foreign relation* committee of the United States Amateur Athletic Union has approved of flic invitation from Australia and New Zealand for American track and field athletes to compefio there, ifc is understood, however, the matter will he referred lotapproval to the track and field committee of the union and the Pacific District Association, which received the imitation.

The whaling ship Nielsen Alonso sailed to-day for the Ross Sea with 30 Tasmanians as seamen, including a university undergraduate. This is the Nielsen Alonso’s third trip to the Antarctic. She will probably link up with Sir Hubert Wilkin’s aerial explorations
and lias taken supplies of oil and aeroplane parks for that expedition. LONDON, Oct. 47.
After a studio demonstration of tho Baiid television apparatus, the British Broadcasting Corporation has issued a statement that its administrative and tsrobeicn<l official found the demonstration interesting as an experiment, but that it failed to justify a broadcast trial. The hoard has therefore decided not- to give an experimental transmission at present, though it is prepared to revise this decision when further development of television makes it justified.
