(From Our Own Correspondent.) GENERAL. For three weeks in succession sunny Saturdays or Sundays have partly compensated for the bad weatner m between. The increasing heat of the sun and the frequent showers are bringing the grass away rapidly; cows are doing well, and prospects for the season seem distinctly good. Garden and potato crops, on the other hand, have not, in many cases, been planted yet, whilst those that have might just as well have been out of the ground during the September spell of rough weather. On Saturday afternoon both tennis and basketball were in full swing at the same time, Miss M. Bailey s basketball afternoons proving themselves more and more popular with the school youngsters. LADIES’ SOCIAL. The afternoon-tea-social scheme inaugurated a couple, of months ago in aid” of hall funds has proved a great social success, besides encouraging m-j terest in hall affairs and providing additional funds for hall activities. At the residence of Mrs. L. Niccolls last Wednesday the fourth of the series took place, when the guests enjoyed a most pleasant afternoon, including songs by Mrs. Boyd (senr.), Mis. Corbett, Mrs. Alty, and the hostess, Mrs Niccolls. The competition, which always adds zest to these gatherings, was won by Mrs. Corbett, the piize bein fr a very pretty cup and saucer and 'plate to* match. Thoise present at the afternoon were Mesdames L. Corbett. C. Arthur.' Thompson. Davies, M. Bourke. W. Lind, Boyd (senr.), Bovd (jnnr.), Hutchings, Hughes, Altv, and the Misses J. McVicar, C. Bailey and Ml. McCarrison. The next afternoon will he on the 17th, when Mrs. C. Arthur will be the hostess. THE COMING BALL. Seldom lias an Awatuna ball created the widesperad interest that the eheesepunchers’ hall on the 19th is causing. From districts far afield parties are being made up, and tne seats on the free buses from Kaponga and Opunake are liable to he rushed once the details of the hall are ad\c 1 - tised. In vieiv of the work that nearly always falls to the share of the ever-willing women, the organising committee has decided that the catering and other work entailed shall he done by the men, thus providing the women with an evening of undiluted enjoyment.
