EX-SOLDIER CYCLIST. DUE AT HAWERA TO-DAY. Literally working 'his passage in a cycle riding circuit of the North. Island, Rihari Hekc, a. one-legged ex-soldier, was due to arrive at Hanvera Post Office at about, five o’clock this- evening. Hekc, who lost a limb at Passchemdaele, is making the 1500-niile ride round the island for a wager. bi-ea-ving Auckland- on fSep-tcmber 22 without funds he is earning expenses by means of the sale of souvenir postcards and f rom those willing to assist him. He has made stops at Papakura, Huntly, Hamilton, Te Awamutu, 0 torch amga. To ICuiti, Urenui, New Plymouth and Stratford. Leaving the last named town to-day he was to call -at Eltham en route to- Hawera. He intends going south as far as Wellington, from where he will proceed through the Wairarapa and up the east coast back to Auckland. Ri Hekc claims to be a descendant of Hone Hoke who made history in the North Auckland district during the Maori wars 80 years ago. Though not as famous as the old-time fighter, Ri has played a part in a much greater war.
