TENNIS.

ANNUAL MEETING OF MANAIA 1 CLUB. I The annual meeting of the Manaia f Tennis and Croquet Club was held on Thursday evening, Mr O. A. L. Smith presiding over a good attendance. The annual report stated there had been a fair reduction in 'the overdraft, and a fair amount had been paid out in improving the lawns and purchasing a new roller. • A number of tennis matches had been played with neighbouring clubs, in which both the A and B teams had had some very interesting, matches. In croquet the Sou'th Taranaki tournament held at Hawera had stimulated play, about 12 members taking part. Mr J. M. Clague was successful in winning the open championship, and also being runner-up in the South Tara- , naki championship. Mrs J. S l . Mc- ’ Kay was also successful in being run-mer-up in the handicap singles. Mrs [ McKay and Mr O'lague were runnersup in the championship doubles. Mrs McKay also represented the club at the New Zealand tourney at Palmerston North and was successful in leaching the semi-finals in one event. The teams also played in the Campbell and McL’Dowie cups. Tennis competitions included Hammend’s Cup (won by Miss Clague and Mr Blair); ladies’ championship (won by Miss J. Hill) ; ladies’ handicap singles (won by Miss Hilles); men’s championship (won by Air C. A. L. Smith); and men’s, handicap singles (won by Mr F. D. Oxley). Thanks were due to Airs C. A. L. Smith for running a competition on her lawns prior to opening day. Thanks are nlso- due to Air's 0. R. Davies and Mrs* Smith for organising a bridge evening which realised over £6. Another item which had helped the funds of the club was the running of three small dances. It- was proposed to hold another dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall and a flannel dance in the Town Hall on opening night. Officers for the year were elected as follows: Patron. Mr A. G. Bennett; president. *Mr C. A. L. Smith; vicepresident! Dr. C. R, Davies; secretary, Air N. Glenny; auditor, Mr A. M. Hannah; h-andi capper Mr G. H. Aleuli; general committee. Miss Hilles. Airs Armitage, Messrs R. Aliller, L. Young j and J. AL Clague; club captain. Air G. H. Aleuli: grounds committee, Airs Armitage, Messrs Clague, Smith and Young; delegate to Taranaki Tennis Association, Mr Balharry -'if agreeable to- act). . New members: Airs Y. F. Winter, Messrs N. Glenny, W. Bannerman and B. Pole. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Smith, . Mrs Davies and the dance committee for their efforts in imnroving the club’s finances. It was' decided to hold one more dance in the Town Hall. A vote of thanks was- tendered to the outgoing officers and to Mr Bennett for the use of his room.
