ALLEGED ARSON. (By TelegrapU—lres* Association.; DANNEVIRKE, Oct. 1. A man named Walter Harford, aged about 48, a cook by occupation, was reman dec! tliis morning till 1' rid ay next on a charge of arson. The accused was seen about seven o’clock on Saturday evening in the vicinity of Ranfmly House, a. boarding establishment near the. railway station, where curtains in a; room were set afire. Subsequently the accused was arrested. A couple of hours earlier the curtains of the room in another part of the building were also discovered to be on fire, hut so far the accused is not connected with this outbreak. MINERS FINED. GREYMOUTH, Oct. 1. M. Muir and E. Hallman. junr., were fined £2 each, with costs, for having matches in their possession whilst working in the Hobson mine,. Thomas' Hills was similarly fined for having a cigarette in his possession. He was also fined £l, with costs, for using threatening language, and £l,' with costs, for assaulting n deputy. Counsel for the nrosemtion said that the company had every reason to believe that smokimr was going on in the mine, and anything might happen... The situation was becoming serious, and he asked that the maximum penalty bo inflicted in future eases. SUPREME COURT AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Oct, 1. Air. Justice Smith sentenced Charles West to two years’ probation for theft of four cows. George Douglas Camplvell was fined £ls for making a, false declaration to obtain a- marriage certificate. The case of Claude Albert Johnson (Paeroa),. who was committed • for incest. was adjourned for a fortnight for a medical examination of the prisoner.
