FISHING SEASON OPENS.
EXCELLENT' CONDITIONS. PROSPECiTS GOOD. Thougth the rivers have been somewhat high as the result of the recent heavy rains, fishermen expected to find conditions good this morning when they went out for the first cast of the season. Two days’ fine, mild weather has made a radical change m the rivers, and with the heavy stocking carried out by the Acclimatisation Society there is likely to be no kick or sport for the disciples of Izaak \v alton for the 1923-29 season. Prospects are in every way excellent, and seem to indicate a very good season. South Taranaki has been famed for its fishing for many years, thanks to the energy, enterprise and prudence oi tlie band of enthusiasts who have been the controlling authority in acclimatisation affairs, and they have done a great work for the anglers. The closing of the Kapiun lor a season will give a chance to see if the rainbow tront will successfully acclimatise in that river. ■ Hitherto this fine fish has shown a tendency to get away, either into the high reaches or out to sea. The recently formed Eel Club, which likewise begins its season to-day, is going to help the anglers for trout, because ’ there is little doubt that vast numbers of the young fish provide meals for eols. W!hilc, therelore, the new fishers- will get good sport, they will also help by "ridding the streams of many of the enemies of trout-. The. secretary of the Acclimatisation Society reported that there was a big rush for licenses on Saturday.
