THE SMALLHOLDER.
The September issue of the “New Zealand Smallholder” is to hand. This attractively printed and profusely illustrated journal deals with many interesting subjects of general interest to farmers, horticulturists, apiarists, fruit-growers, poultry breeders, etc.
Mr. H. It. Penny, of Okaiawa, contributes an article on the managemetn of out-yards in bee culture. Healing as- it does with the experience of the writer, a well-known apiarist of South, Taranaki, the article should prove of value to those engaged in bee-keeping. Interesting to amateur horticulturists will be found an article on the joys of spring gardening and garden hints, contributed bv Mr. Leonard A. Griffiths, _ F.R.H.S., F.N.Z. Imst. Included in this contribution arc very useful hints to newly-married couples on the right methods' to pursue- in their initial efforts in making their first garden.
Another article of interest to South Taranaki is that having reference to a challenge issued by Mr. Robert Gibsou, of Manaia, the well-known daffodil grower, to Mr. J. G. Weight-man, in which the first-named gentleman issued a challenge to Mr. Weiglitman to a- contest at the Wanganui and Lower Hutt shows of exhibiting the best proved 12 varieties of daffodils. In the August issue of “The Smallholder” it was stated that Mr. Weightman had accepted the challenge, hut evidently a misunderstanding had taken place, for Mr. Weightman says that there jvas no authority given to “The Smallholder” for stating that he had accepted the challenge as laid down by Mr. Gibson or that be would compete against his old friend at either of the two shows mentioned. Mr. Weightman could not carry out the. competition, as he was judge at Wanganui show.
