NOTES AND NEWS.
There are now 23 district associations lormnig the New Zealand Motor Traders’ Association, -an increase of six on last year. x The Automobile Club, • London, is making .a miles test of a commercial lorry driven by a German engine/' WlndY uses crude oil and has neither magneto nor carburettor, it Ls claimed that the fuel bill is reduced to one-quarter the cost of running an ordinary petrol engine. The makers say the engine can be applied to cars and motor-cycles.
Just how far the hand throttle should be opened to aid the starting process seems quite a problem to many drivers. .Some err on the side ot penury, others on the side of* generosity. Either is wrong, for in tlie first ease the engine does not start, and in the second it runs too rapidly when it does turn over. The throttle should be set at that point where, operating in connection with the accelerator, it depresses the latter slightly. This specification fits virtually every case.
Tlie steady and consistent reduction in the prices o t British motoring products, accompanied by an improvement in the standard of design, penoimance and equipment has been one of the most remarkable features of the British motoring industry during the past 10 years. On a gold basis the current prices are 47 per cent, and 37.6 per cent respectively below those of 1914. At the same time a far better product is offered and the equipment is in every way complete.
A German motor engineer has invented a new type of bumper, consisting of a bar of rubber material supported on steel brackets. It is said that two cars fitted with these bumpers were driven into one another head on at a speed of thirty-five miles per hour, and although the bumpers were bnc-kled, the cars themselves sustained no damage.
Test all your tyres, including the spare, at least once a week with a t>re gauge. Friday is the best day, because most tyres do their hardest work over the week-end. lour tyre dealer can tell you exactly what pressure to us© lor each pair of tyres tront and back. Begin this “rriday testing” and enjoy longer tyre service, easier steering, better car balance, and greater riding comfort.
