NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By “Maecenas.”) The one day spring meeting of the .Hawke’s Bay Jockey tClub takes place at Hastings to-morrow. The .annual meeting of the Pakuranga Hunt Club is to be held at Ellerslic to-morrow. Those who wrte at the winter meeting. of the Wellington Racing Olub and noted, the easy manner in which Toxeuma beat Roscrea and 'Consent, were quite prepared to find Toxeuina equal to beating hacks at Napier last Saturday. If Bahadur is anything like well he should prove equal to any of those opposing him in the Greenmount Steeplechase at the -Pakuranga meeting. As the class is very .poor Pekatahi and Ramblin’ Kid should run prominently in the Hunters’ Hurdles at. Elierslie to-morrojw. Toxeiinia, who won in hack class at Wellington and Napier Park meetings, will be a runner in The Hawke’s Bay Guineas to-morrow, and it will take something good to beat this ex-hack in the classic, event. The Pakuranga Hunt 'Club a,re offering splendid prize money for to-mor-row’s meeting, but the class o'f horses engaged in the hunter races are deeid-, dly poor. Indeed, it is questionable whether such huge prizes should be competed for by such inferior horses. With 8.12 'Cashier has a fair load to- carry in the Auckland 'Handicap tomorrow, but his opponents are a very .poor lot. The Lover, if started, may give most trouble. Mr J. Morris, has a wonderful record in races confined to amateur riders; he will be on Moy Hall to-morrow, and as that gelding has shown a little pace in races and hails from J. T. Jamieson’s stable, he should be favourite in the Ladies’ Bracelet. It is stated that Mr Sol Green is prepared to back Gothic 'for ia fortune to beat Limerick over a mile. The pair have met twice and 'Limerick has ' won each time. So perhaps Mr Green is trying to get back some of the huge amount he lost over these defeats of his English importation. Golden Wedding has been working well, and at the Avondale meeting .just) over, finished a good fourth after getting all the worst of the start. On that showing Golden Wedding may be well backed in the Sylvia Park Handicap at to-morrow’s Pakuranga Hunt meeting. The .Lover is well and may run a good race too. Mint Leaf ran two good races at the recent meeting at Avondale and no doubt will 'again, show up in the Jelli•coe Handicap to-morrow, but; as Valkon ran a good fourth in the Avondale Cup last Saturday and is on the improve all the while, he looks certain to beat Mint Leaf at a difference of 41bs in tO'-morrow’is race. In AVell (informed circles Goshawk is also expected to be. .prominent. Trainer F. Tilley had his team very forward in condition foT the Wanganui meeting, with the result that he secured several races against horse's that had the advantage of racing at Marton. Freehold, who showed fair form last season, was not produced at Wanganui, but is engaged in the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting. At a difference of half a stone Nancy Lee may be preferred tomorrow. The big spring carnival of 'the Australian Jockey 'Club opens at Ranrhvick to-morrow, fwhen Now Zealanders will bo most interested in the doings of Limerick in the Sprin.g Stakes and Roscrea, Prince Humphrey, Raasay, and Concentrate in the A.J.'C. Derby. Oyer the twelve fin-longs' of the Spring Stakes a few good judges expect Winalot to beat. .Limerick, but it is probably a case of the wish -being father to the thought. It would appear that Mollison is next to a -certainty for the Derby, and in conversation with an Australian writer F. D. Jones gave as his opinion that Mollison was next to unbeatable, and it was simply .a matter 'of what three-year-old will be second. Personally, I shall be disappointed if Roscrea does not give Mollison a good race, as there is little doubt that he is genuine, although perhaps not really high-class.
