BURIED ALIVE
MURDER OF ELDERLY COUPLE DOCTORS’ INVESTIGATIONS. WHAT EXAMINATION REVEALED (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association —United Service.) Received 11.15 a.m. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 24. Medical evidence, at the inquest on the Kirbys indicated that both '.vere buried alive while insensible, death occurring eight to 20 hours prior to exhumation. The man had several wounds on his head and scratches on his back, which indicated that he had been dragged by the feet. Marks on the. woman’s throat pointed to strangulation, while scratches on her face showed that she was dragged a short distance and her head bore a 3 large abrasion. Grit in her lungs and at the bronchial point in the man s windpipe led to the conclusion that both had gasped for breath aftei burial. AN ARREST MADE. LONDON, Sept. 23. In connection with the murder of Thomas Kirby and his.wife at Norton, the police have arrested on a charge of implication in the murder Charles William Conlin, aged 22, an ex-soldier and a grandson of the murdered* woman by her first marriage. CONLIN CHARGED WITH THE CRIME. Received 2.10 pm. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 24. Thousands thronged the court when Conlin was charged with the murder of the Kirbys. He was. remanded for eight days. He swooned. _ and six' constables carried him to his cell.
