A New York cablegram says that the engagement of Sir Hubert Wilkins, the airman, _ who has just started, for the Antarctic, to Miss Suzanne Bennett, the Australian actress, ,is announced. After 30 yeans’ service in the nursing profession, Miss A. Taylor, lady superintendent of the Auckland Public Hospital, will retire on superannua--tion at the end of the year. The death has occurred, after a short illness, of Mabel Betty, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edgar Peppcrell, of Awatuna. They are settlers who' have lived all their lives in the district and the sympathy of all friends •will go out to them in their bereavement. The death has occurred of Sir. Beethom Whitehead, aged 70, who during a long diplomatic career was at one time British Minister at Belgrade, states a British official wireless message.
Mr John 'Tucker, organiser of the Young Australia League, is a passenger by the Marama, states a (Sydney message. He will visit New Zealand in. an endeavour to arrange a quota of Dominion youths to participate in the League’s forthcoming tour of the United States and 'Canada.
The death lias occurred of Abdel Khalek Sarwat Pasha, who was Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior in the, 1927 Egyptian Cabinet (states, a Paris’ message). Sarwat Pasha a few months ago visited England with King Fuad in an endeavour to bring about a better relationship between the two countries. Since: then the Egyotian Parliament has been suspended.
Having concluded an investigation into, aerial - defence and transport in Australia, Air Marshal Sir John S&l----mond, officer commanding the air defences of -Grealt Britain, is expected to arrive at Auckland by the Aorangi today. Sir John will confer with aviation experts concerning New; Zealand’s air force programme.
