TE KIRI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PERSONAL.' Much regret was felt in To Kiri at the unexpected death of Air 'C. 11. Hurst and sympathy expressed for Mrs Hurst and familv. The eldest son "Chris’ was killed'on Armistice Day. The second son, Bert, is at present, ill, and, if able, will leave immediately for the ■South Island to recuperate. The funeral, which took place at Pihama last Wednesday, was largely attended, although it was one of the roughest days experienced for a long time. The casket was covered with beautiful wreaths, testifying to the respect in which the deceased was held. A service was held at the - Pihama 'Church by the Rev. Mr -Coa'tswortlr, assisted bv the Rev. Mr Preston. Mention. was 'made of the deceased’s untiring work for the Methodist .Church and "as Sunday school teacher, which position he had filled for many years. The Opunnke Harbour Board, Awatuna Dairy 'Company, and To Kiri School Committee were represented, Mr Hurst having served on each. At the graveside the service was conducted by the Rev Mr Coatsworth. the pall-bearers being .Messrs T. P. Huglis'on. sent-., J. iS. Tbsland, J. A. Pettigrew, W. Falk : ner, and Messrs Hurst (brothers of deceased). GENERAL.

Many cars journeyed from hero to view the arrival of the gallant Tasman fliers at the Hawera racecourse. The school children had a holiday for the occasion. The local school gardens present n beautiful sight, at present, the daffodils round the memorial and the lawn being in full bloom. The lawn itself is looking very nice and the gardens are a credit to teacher and pupils alike. Around the back of the memorial and facing the tennis court the boys have just formed a series of rockeries, which will be an immense improvement when the flowers grow. The committee intend ploughing and laying down a basketball court, between the school and the tennis court, as well as concreting the paths at the entrance. The final euchre party was held last week, and was but sparsely attended. The prizes for the evening went to Mrs Pointon and Mr Edgar Watson. The points prizes for the season were won by Mrs .Saye'd and (Mrs 'H. Huwilcr. To Kiri boy's very gamely tackled Auroa at footiball last week, being sartlv outclassed (bv 19 to 3. Mr R. 0. Watson kindly conveyed the boys to Auroa.
