NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By “Maecenas.”! ■ The form displayed by -Cashier in each of his starts at Wanganui last week marks him as really promising as lie was not. bv any means as seasoned as some of those he beat. 'The most pleasing feature about 'Cashier’s running was the rare courage exhibited by him in each start; in fact this trait helped him to beat opponents that, were in better rating condition. Cashier should do w v eli later on. Although 'The Warden had not been in work long .'he ran excellent races at ,Marion and Wanganui. He is freely engaged in the season’s three-year-old races, -but.'.his owner has now decided to give The Warden -a ichance -to build up, 'lienee (he will probably not race before 'Christmas, .if then. This decision is a wise one, as given time the Australian bred three-year-old will certainly pay his way. Seeing that, Trainer Jcffcrd did -not race Star Stranger at Wanganui last Saturday, it would appear that he is satisfied that this finffperfprater is .quite as forward as desirable, seeing we
have only started spring racing. As Star Stranger stands alone as the best slayer engaged in the Avondale Cup he may prove hard ,to beat. In the two-year-old .parade and the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui last week, ißnle _ Britannia showed some speed, and with time, should secure some stake .money. This filly is a halfsister by Chief Ruler to the once brilliant Orchid, so on breeding alone should bo capable of galloping fast. Rangitoa, who was a runnel, but failed to show up prominently in the two - year-old event held at Wanganui last week, is a half-brother to Paddington Green and Royal Mint, both of which have won a if air amount of stake (money. As Rangitoa does not tloolc ready, it is yet too soon to form ari opinion of his cap'abilities. King Lu will be the most seasoned runner in Saturday’s Avondale. Cup, and judging by his excellent showing in the Eclipse Stakes at Wanganui) he is quite at his best. Sonic fancy that the twelve furlong of the Avondale Cup will prove too far .for the,, son of Lu-cullus; King Lu has rarely raced over long courses, but at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club he ran a creditable second under 9.4 to Rapier, (9.6) in the .Clifford Plate, Satrap (S.6j being third; this event, was 1$ miles.
First, (Money (Paper Money—Peron-i-lla), who led the . field 'home in the second division of the Wanganui two-year-old. parade, was not a runner in the Debutant*) 'Stakes on the second day, but his name appears among those accepted for in Saturday’s Avondale Stakes. First Money i's a nicely turned colt that looks certain to win races for the local owner, Mr W. J. Jorger son. -
The Psychology—(Miss 'Cute two-year-old 'Clever Lad worked well prior to going to Wanganui and her experienced trainer (F. Davis) quite expected the filly to prove her superiority at Wanganui last ' Saturday. 'Her rider was unfortunate. enough to draw an outside position at 'th e barrier, a big handicap at Wanganui, seeing, that Clever Lad had the valued services of :R. Rood, who sent her away smartly from the barrier, but her showing certainly fell far short of expectations. Mr T. Bristol, in whose name The Warden races, comes from a very old racing family, and those that took an interest in racing- of a decade back will remember the, black and amber colours, of his father, so. ably carried by Swift Light, Lcoiifa and many others. Mr Bristol evidently intends, racing on a fairly extensive scale in the ne'ar future, as in addition to ,having The Warden trained, a three-quar-ter brother to that good horse Illumination .and a two-year-old that claims Chief Ruler —Haupai as its breeding, are being prepared for Mr Bristol at Wanganui. While Knightlike did not gain place money at Wanganui last Thursday and his performance was not quite as good as expected, he did not run a bad race. He would need -to show great improvement to attain -the standard originally expected of him, and on recent form Will never win a 'classic, but he should pay his way when the company is not too select. Knightlike is engaged at the Napier Park meeting on Saturday next, and although he wil) bo opposed by. several promising horse's the recent racing at iMorton and Wanganui gives him ari advantage. Lucky .Light and her full sister, Speed Light, arc both on, 'the small side, but like all of 'Simper’s ptdgeny they' gallop very fast. 'Lucky Light, was nominated for the open sprint race at the Avondale meeting, and with only seven -stone to carry some were -selecting her one likely to race well in,this event, but. after her failure over a mile at Wanganui few will fancy Lucky Light in the'Guineas.
