THE PATEA TOURNEY

SMITHERAM BEATS HILL

The heavyweight bout at the Patea boxing Association’s tourney on Tuesday was won by S. Smitheram, not F. Hill as reported on Wednesday. The identification of the fighters was re.ersed in the report and where Hill’s name was used the actual reference was to Smitheram and vice versa. The description of the bout should have read as follows:

Though both were cautious in the opening round the heavyweights, S. Smitheram, 13.8 (Patea), and F. Hill, 13.0 (Patea), provided three rounds pleasingly free of dlinches for fighters of their class. XJse of left leads which connected lightly decided a somewhat doubtful margin'in favour of Hill. In the second Smitheram made telling use of body blows when lie could get to close quarters and a right cross to the face drew crimson from Hill’s nose Both were bleeding early in the third round when a hard rally by Smitheram crumpled his opponent, the referee topping the bout and giving .Smitheram the de ision on a virtual knockout.
