LIGHT HARNESS SPORT

NOTES ON THE TROTTERS.

(By “Escapade.’’)

The North Island trotting season will commence with the Wellington meeting on 'September 15. Tiie acceptances are good and with the extra stake money given the racing .should be -of high class. 'The Hawera-owhed El Direct is in the maiden race. He was a promising sort last year, s'o may perform well. Rolfe Audubon is by Great Audubon-' Miss Ralfe, and was owned by Mr R. Reid, now stipendiary steward. This fine colt was sold for a nigh figure. The unhoppled trotting fields are rather weak so far as quality is concerned. Nelson Boy and Great Amazon seem the best.

The Bollard Handicap, 'the big two mile race, should prove interesting, as some : o-ood -class horses have -accepted. Pageant looks the pick of the limit division. Tamerlane has a 'chance from 12 yards, but. Vesuvius on 24 yards m-iiv <be the winner.

The New Zealand Cup 'Trial Handicap will possibly bo a guide to New Zealand Cup form. ‘Cardinal Logan, on Addington form, reads well. In the Wellington Handicap Sailor Boy is well handicapped. If he begins correctly he may trouble Grand Light, who is ’.T. Bryce’s Derby colt. The Haworu track is beginning to grow very busy. Willets and Smith have taken over 11. Barraelongh’s stable and have several horses in work. Kill mar looks well -after his spell. He is doing mostly road work. Bright Light is in great heart and should be an improved horse this season. That good trotter, 'Gall Boy, has not put in an appearance on the track yet. If he is to be ready for spring racing he will soon need to be working. C. Le (Campion has a big team of young horses. The Our Thorpe mare is ■shaping injicely (and 'should soon be ready to- ra'ee.

Kohara, iSis’ter Beatrice and Dillon Huon all look well after their Christchurch trip. Dillon Huon is now .amongst the best class. He may find it hard to win now, as his performance whs put up on a good track. Sister Beatrice is one of the few trotters wi'th a 4.28 record. She will' be Tll a ted with Petcrwah after the New Zealand Uup meeting. Richore, who recently arrived from Christchurch, is a fine looking horse.. It will bo interesting to sec if he improves in his behaviour. The Palmerston North -trotting mare Native Star is now in M. B. Edwards ’ stable, Christchurch. Padlock has been rather harshly treated in the XeW Zealand Cup. He was entitled to the limit, but was placed on the 12yds behind. Kohara was placed where expected in the New Ze'aland Cup Handicap. Imprint has joined J. Bryce’s stable. He will be a possible cup winner now, as Brvce is a pa'st master with cup horses.
