MANAIA AFFAIRS.
THE WORK OF THE TOWN BOARD
Last night's meeting being the last before the annual election of new' members, the chairman of the Manaia Town Board (Commissioner N. C. innes) took occasion to congratulate members on the work done during the past two years. If the best and lasting work was to be accomplished, there muist be complete harmony and co-operation. There had been 'some friction at the board meetings, and members' bad not always seen eye to eye with one another. But this had never been carried out of the board room except in one instance. He said there were too many pessimists in the town, who said the rates were too high, but he assured them that they were not so high as in many other daces. They had to remember _ that this year there had been extraordinary expenditure that would not recur. The rates were : General, 2d in the £, and sewerage about 3d, but they should aemember that the Power Board, hall', Main South Road and sanitation rates had not been charged. r He had been eight years' on the hoard, two as chairman, and his one desire had been to see the drainage oom- . ..tod, but this had: not been allowed to him. He claimed he had done his best in the interests of all, and' left without any feeling of regrets l , and he hoped others would cany on the good work. Or. Hickey said they could have no better chairman nor one who had worked harder. He came, in as chairman to complete the drainage scheme, but this was not feasible. The time was not far distant, however, when this would be accomplished 1 . Times were bright and prospects l good, and the favourable position in dairying, would hr reflected in the town. Manaia had, however, a hard row to' hoe, because it had been mapped out for a big town, and in addition co-operative stores had retarded progress, in hie opinion. In conclusion:, he said he honed Mr Innes would reconsider his decision and come baick once more a.s ciliairman. Commissioner® Massey and Hobday added their congratulations, and expressed the hope that good men would bo. found to carry on the board’s work. The clerk (Mr Radley) thanked. the chairman and members for help given to him and said lie felt sure that progress would ho made in the future.
