MINING INDUSTRY.
- PRIME AIINISTER RECEIVES DEPUTATION. UNEMPLOYMENT AND OTHER MATTERS. (By Telegrapn—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. A deputation representing the West medical associations and the State Miners ’ Union waited >on -the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) to- discuss matters affecting the welfare of miners, Air H. E. Holland introducing it._ A request was made that a scheme bo devised whereby Ithe miners, the owners and the State would each contribute threepence per miner per week to sick funds. The income of the existing fund -last year was £597, against an expenditure -of £779 Iss.
Air Coates asked if there was any objection to a levy being made on the accident fund for the .purpose of sick relief, and the Unci er- Sec r e tary of Alines said there was no legal objection.
The question of the Nga-kawa leases was also brought up. Air Coates said he would see what could -be done to clear the matter up.
With regard to unemployment Air Holland suggested that -work should be found on railway works in the vicinity. Air Coates said they had more public works men than they knew what to do with. He had been making investigations with a view to mapping out work for miners, but he was not in a position to say anything definite ye't. Air'Connell, president of the Aliners ’ Union, brought up minor matters not adopted between the union and the department when an agreement was under consideration.
Air Coates said -he would be pleased to go into the various matters and would forward a. reply to the union.
