New Zealand (horses among the first acceptors for the Caulfield and Melbourne Ou-ps are : Hynanua, Roscrea, and Atukiwai. The 'latter has also' accepted for the Epsom and Metropolitan handicaps. Arikiw.ai’s off lore-leg, however, Is giving Trouble, with considerable heat. After Saturday’s race Tvaruma. and Don Mo noil are in great favour for the- Epsom Handicap, Rlionsohup for the Metropolitan, Gothic for tlie Caulfield Cup,. Statesman and Win-alot, for the Melbourne Cup, and Moll-ison for the A.J.C. Derby. MARTON SPRING MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW. (By “Maecenas.”) In former years the Marton Jockey Club held a two-day meeting in the spring of the year, but as suc-h rarely shoved much prolit, the committee decided to try a one-day spring meeting, while the permit for the other day will be used for a winter meeting (May 4). As the acceptances for this year’s one day meeting are excellent, it would appear that the club has done something from which it may gain funds to meet a heavy liability. With the minimum handicap reduced to seven stone, the •- Marton Club’s gathering is virtually the opening ot the fiat racing season of 1928-29. Amongst the acceptors for the meeting are several New Zealand Cup candidates, also horses engaged in weiglit-for-age races and important handicaps of the early spring, ft is thus obvious that the meeting is a most important one from many points of view. Racing will open with the- Trial Plate, in which there is a large field. Many of those engaged have no public form to guide one, but last season .Mauriaena, Merxeis, Upoko, and Inflame aIL showed pace in some of their engagements last season, so the thioe-year-'olds Merxeis and Mauriaena may show up to-morrow. A good class is engaged in the Rata Hack Hurdles. After the recent heavy rains and the fact that the race track is comparatively new, the going is sure to be heavy, features that do not usually favour a competitor high up in the" weights, but in spite of such it will come as ’a. surprise should Cohesion not prove troublesome, while Olympic, on Trentliam form (where Jie won under 9.4), should also securesome prize money. Gala Day has useful performances on the hat. but may do better with seasoning.
Tlie Spring Hack Cup is next on the programme. It is not an easy matter to nominate even one to fill a minor place. Pangolin ran well in races at both Ricearton and Treutham. Singleton has shown on occasions that lie may develop into a useful handicap performer, and his double success at Gisborne recently brings him into prominence. Gold Cure, Maui, Teri, and Lucy Rose all have claims. Possibly Singleton and Teri will do best. Considering tlie value of the prize a really go-od field has been secured for the Marton Cup. On such a heavy course as Marton is certain to be Nukumni shows his best form, but while lie will possibly race well to-morrow, some of those below him in handicap may prove too good. Bisox lias run a number of good races during tlie fast three months, and as she gallops well on a soft track and will have the services of 11. Reed she must he respected. Royal Mint and Queen Arch also go well under soft conditions, so the trio named should be remembered. Like all such races in this portion of tlie island, the hunters engaged in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase are very moderate. Mataipuke ran two seconds at the recent meeting of the Canterburv Jockey Club, but- fell at Dannevirke last Thursday. Poor as the record Is. this gelding has the best credentials of any, but is only very moderate. Scrap Iron may give him a good race. There is another promising lot in the electric hack. Many of these are smart,, and ere the season- closes may he fair stake earners. Callanmore won at the last meeting held at Trentliam, Ahisogne at Pannevirke and Gisborne, and Knighll ike at the Hawke s Bay Hunt (lid) meeting. Of the three, Knight like is the one most likely to improve, ami lie should receive most trouble from ot her i hree-year-ohlis in High Faltilin and Mention Treasury. No less than nineteen are accept on for in the Railway Handicap. This is a really strong class field, but- as some of those engaged have not- had a race for some time they will not show their host or true form. Tea. Time is an exception, and races we 11 fresh. IT anything like his best Staghunter would be a difficult proposition, and the form displayed by Oration at Now Plvmouth last Saturday draws attention to his chance. If lie again gallops generously, he will be one of those prominent at the finish. Under the
light scale of weights Miss Pat should show better form. An excellent lot of hacks are engaged in the Tutaenui Handicap. A few of the acceptors for this event have shown form of late, but others have not had the benefit of a publicgallop for a considerable time. As Pale Star is well, and is a real sticker, he should again give a good account of himself. Flying Shot raced well hist Saturday, and that gallop will be •if distinct- advantage, so be 100 should satisfy his supporters. NOTES AND COMMENTS As a two-year-old last season Lady Quex showed great speed in several, of her races, and was backed with confidence by her connections, but winning chances were extinguished by her waywardness in running wide with her riders. With age and the advantage of racing, Lady Quex may develop into a useful stake earner. Although generally expected, the success of Limerick in the Warwick Stakes last Saturday gave satisfaction to followers of racing throughout the Dominion, as it proved that the greatson of Limoncl had made age improvement, or at- least had not gone hack. Just how far into the season Limerick will race without meeting defeat is problematical, as after Saturday’s racing it would appear that Mollison and Winalot are quite as good as their admirers claimed. While the season is still young, the three-year-olds Knightlike, Silver Paper, and Lady Quex have won races. True, such events were only of the hack class, but nevertheless it Is gratifying to read of the -successes of three-vear-olds against those of more mature 'age. How often do eve find a two-year-old going into retirement, hailed as a champion, only to find that with increasing age he does not even reach hack standard. As a two-year-old Mollison demonstrated last season that he was a super colt for his yeans, and he finished up the season unbeaten, having accomplished a number of outstanding performances. Seeing that many thoroughbreds fail to make age improvement, much interest was centred in the Australian three-year-olds’ first appearance- for the season, which took place on Saturday last in the Hobaytville Stakes at the A.J.C. Warwick Farm meeting. In winning_easily ovei the seven furlongs in 1.2/, Mollison demonstrated in no uncertain mannei that he is still a great galloper. When Trivalve was performing like a ~champion last spring in Australia the admirers of Winalot claimed that three-year-old as quite equal, .if not superior, to Trivalve, and trainer G. Price was ai disappointed man when he lost Winalot. While it was claimed (and his form confirmed such,) that Trivalve was off colour in the autumn, Winalot proved his superiority over his Derby victor. During the winter V\ inalot ‘did well, and it- is only a few weeks ago since be was supported at satisfactory odds to win a lot of money if successful in tlie Melbourne Cup. After the commission was launched those connected with Winalot made it public that they expected tlie Australian four-year-old to beat Limerick at weiglit-for-age in the longer distance events. Obviously, had they waited, and Winalot was found equal to such a great feat, his price would be a very short one in the Melbourne (‘up. As Winalot is. not looked on as brilliant.' bis effort against our champion last Saturday was indeed good.
