FIRE.
AUCKLAND CONVENT DAMAGED. (By Telegraph—lress Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 3. Eire severely damaged the Holy C’.'oss Convent, . a 12-roomed, twostoreyed wooden building at Epsom, to-night. The children were away on holiday, and only two nuns were m residence. They had left the building temporarily to make some purchases at a shoo. A crowd gathered and rescued the pianos and other articles of furniture. The rear half of the building was damaged beyond repair. In the hall on the ground floor fixed to • the wall was a plaster figure of Christ crucified. Round it the walls were badlv charred, but the figure was untouched.
