* . i (From Our Own Correspondent.) TENNIS CLUB YEAR. . The annual meeting of the Opunake j Tennis Club was 'held in Mr C. O. Edmonds ’ office on Tuesday evening, the. president (Mr F. Julian) presiding over a fair attendance. In his report the president stated that during the last season a number of matches with neighbouring clubs had been played and resulting in the club holding its own after some very exciting contests. Although a; few new members would be enrolled during the coming season the club had been most unfortunate in losing some of its best supporters in Mr and Mrs H. Whitehead. Messrs J. Burton and D. Keenan and the Misses E. O’Leary and E. Tippins, all having left the district. The election of officer# resulted as follow: President, Mr F. vicepresidents, Messrs C. O. Edmouds, W. H. Burgess and Mrs F. Hammond; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. J. Thomas; executive committee, Misses B. Chambers and E. Trotter and Mr W. H. Burgess; selection committee; Miss E. Trotter and Messrs D. J. Thomas and W. H. Burgess; club captain, Mr C. O. Edmonds; grounds committee, Messrs W. 11. Burgess and K. Hawkins. The opening day was fixed for Labour Day. It was decided that subscriptions be gentlemen 30s, ladies 15s; country members, gentlemen, 15s; ladies, 7s (Id. The president lias donated a trophy in the form of a /miniature cup to be played for by the lady members of the club. LADIES’ GOLF. Ou Wednesday afternoon a. team of lady golf players from Manaia visited Opunake and were defeated' by the local ladies by six games' to tw'o. The following are the details of the play (Manaia players being mentioned first in each case): —. Mrs 0. A. Smith lost to Mrs G. Boyle, 2 up; Mrs Craig defeated Mrs R. J. Morris, 2 up and 1; Miss Ryan l lost to Mrs- Corkill 1 up; Mrs J. Christie defeated Miss Hotter, -1 up and 2; Miss E. Lloyd lost „to Miss E. Trotter, 4 up -and 3; Mrs Boutko lost to Mrs F. Hammond, 7 up and 6; Miss C. Lloyd and Mrs J. S. Church, all square; Mrs M. Bourke lost to Mrs J. Burton, 2 up; Mrs Davies and Mrs I. S. Hickey, all square; Miss' Patterson lost to Mrs Loeseh, 7 up and 3. After the match the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the members of the club. BALL AT PIHAMA. The first annual ball of the Pihania Ladies’ Hockey Club was held in. the Piharna Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance to dance to the music supplied' by Coburn ’s orchestra. Extras were played by Mrs Walker and Misses J. Pollock and T. Young. The hall and supper room were. artistically decorated by members of the club in the club colours (red and blue) and the supper arrangements, /under the supervision of Mesdames A. Wilcox, Donaghy and the Misses .T. Pollock, N. Smith, D. Wilcox, C. Harrop, S. Forsyth, W-ooldridge, N. and A. Conatglen, B. and M. Donaghy, J. Gaily, and Z. Newshaun met with popular appreciation. Miss J. Pollock acted as secretary and Mr D. Pollock called out the duties of M.C. On behalf of the club Mr J. D. Conaglcn thanked all in attendance for the ■support accorded and apologised for the unavoidable absence of the president of the club (Mr A. F. Ncilson). Miss J. Pollock also spoke. WEDDING BELLS. A pretty wedding was solemnised on • Wednesday last by the Rev.- J. Preston between Mr hi. F. Peters, of .Waiteka Road, Opunake, and Miss Hester Thomson. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Mary Thomson, as bridesmaid and Mr Norman Peters officiated as best man. At the wedding breakfast the usual toasts were honoured and the ‘best wishes were extended to the happy couple.
