CROSSING TRAGEDY.
SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT STRATFORD.
WOMAN KILLED INSTANTLY.
A shocking accident occurred at the Fenton Street railway crossing, Stratford, on Saturday afternoon-, Mrs. E. Jones, a widow, aged 69 years, being killed instantaneously in full view or several people. , Mrs. Jones, who re sided m Fenton Street and was well known throughout the district, was walking ip! 0 , town. She was known to be somewhat deaf, and apparently she- neither saw nor heard the approaching 4.35 p.m. train from Wanganui. She was struck by the locomotive and thrown from the footpath across the cattle stop. The train was brought to a standstill, and several eye-witnesses rushed to the scene. Dr. Steven, who arrived a few minutes later, found that life was extinct. Mrs. Jones leaves two sons and 1 two daughters: v Messrs. Stan Jones (Stratford) and! Percy Jones- (Midhirst). Mrs: IV. Lawrence (Stratford) and Miss Jones (Australia). An inquest was opened yesterday afternoon, and was adjourned after formal evidence of identification had been taken.
