MANAIA.
PASSING OF A VETERAN.
IAtPRESSIVE FUNERAL,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
The funeral of the late Sergt.-Major White, of Sutherland Road, took place yesterday, and full military honours were 'accorded. There was a long cortege and the service was conducted by the Rev. C. W. Solomon, of the Mauaia Anglican Church. The bearers were neighbours l —Messrs W. Bourke, M. .Tones, B. Lowe, .T. Anderson, W. Anton, and J. Silvester. In the party following w T erc several veteran friends of the deceased', including Mr A. McKcown, of Pihftima, who served with him fifty odd years ago. There were on parade a firing party from Queen Alexandra’s •Mounted Rifles and the Manaia Brass Band, under Bandmaster Cosgrove l , the whole being under the command of Colonel Sutherland.
At the conclusion of the service the mounted riflemen fired three volleys, Mr Cosgrove- sounded the "Last Post,’’ and the band_ played three verses ef the hymn "Abide with Ale,’’ this concluding an impressive ceremony and a fitting -tribute for one who had served his country well in the -early days.
