NANKING SETTLEMENT.
BRITISH CONSUL RETURNS. SCRAMBLE FOR TRADE CONCESSIONS. (United Tress Association —By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) SHANGHAI, Aug. 22. As the .result of the satisfactory settlement of 'the Nanking incident of March, 1927, Mr W. M. Hewlett, British Consul, is proceeding to- Nanking to. take up his residence ashore for the first time in. .17 months, the British consular duties at Nanking since the incident having been carried out aboard «, warship anchored on the Nanking waterfront.
It is -reported that. Germany is transferring her embassy from Peking to. Namtking, she- being the first. Western nation thus to recognise the Nationalists. There appears -to be a scramble among the nations to secure .the special trade concessions promised by the Nationalists to the nations quickly revising their treaties on a: basis of equality. Following closely on the heels of the conclusion of the new Sino-Germain, commercial treaty pledging equality of Customs treatment, it. is reported that the Belgian. Charge d’Affaires hasmade a special journey to- Nanking to discuss treaty revision with the Nationalist Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and America, Portugal and Britain have •expressed willingness, and Italy and Japan alone are adamant.
