REPRESENTATIVE MATCH
WANGANUI DEFEAT TARANAKI
The annual soccer -match between Taranaki and Wanganui was played on Cook’s Gardens on Saturday before a good attendance. The game started- under ideal weather conditions, but a heavy drizzling rain during the second spell made good play a bit difficult (says the Wanganui Chronicle'.”) W anganui won the toss and started with the sun in their eyes. The home team were the first to attack, but were isoon sent back. At the other end Martin had to save, conceding a corner, which, was cleared. The next raid by Taranaki ended when Bremer shot weakly .past. AVanganuil had a chance to gain”the opening goal, but Hope mulled' the- pass l .
A nice bit of play -by’ Heath put Wanganui in a good position, and Gilbert carried on to give AYangaiuu the lead with, a good shot. The home team kept on the move, Henderson (Taranaki) showing up well in defensive play. The visitors got a grip of the game at this stage, and gave the AA’anganui defence a lot of trouble, but were very weak in finishing. A free to them looked good, but nobody was near to finish off. Gilbert and Jamieson showed up well for AA’anganui and Gilroy made a good attempt at scoring, which waS saved. Soon after AA’anganui made another •aid which culminated in Heath scoring. A cross from Hope should have brought another score, but Jamieson dallied too long with the ball and lost it.
Dick cut out the work for the next score, leaving Gilroy an easy task to head the hall into the net, and halftime found the scores: AA'anganui 3; l'uranaki 0.
Wanganui took charge of matters at the start of the second spell. A trim through by Heath looked promising, but Shepherd saved well. The goalie also saved a good effort from Dickson. A nice (bit of play by Hill took Taranaki down the field, but Henderson slhot over. Hill sent across another nice pass, but it went begging.
The visitors opened their account from tft penalty for hands. Randall took the kick and scored, Martin just failing to turn the ball round the post. The game, which had got a, bit quiiet, livened up after this and Taranaki kept the home defence' well stretched with their long passing. A run by Hope raised enthusiaism, but nothing Came from it.
Nice footwork by McLay paved the way for another score, Heath accepting the cross to beat Shepherd. From a corner kick Gilbert put the home side further ahead. The game was now safe for AA'anganui, but the visitors never gave in and launched numerous attacks at Martin, and eventually got their reward. Hill scoring with the last kick of the game, and the final whistle found the 'score: AA’anganui 5 Taranaki 2
