IS Billy Grime, the Australian, had the judge's decision against him in his fight with Steve Smith. Grime weighed 12Sl'.b and Smith 1271ib. In the first round Grime staggered the veteran Smith with a series of rights to the chin. f t'he, second, round Grime took easily with left hooks, an elusive dodging attack, employing a long left and a short right. In the third round Grime won the applause of the crowd by neatly outboxing Smith. In the fourth round Smith got under Grime’s open defence, aw, drove him about the ring with rights and lefts to the face. In the fifth round Grime’s defence failed, and Smith opened <i» cut over the . Australian’s right eye with a fiicking iert. The sixth round was even. in the seventli moil ml Grime floored Smith briefly with a right. The eighth and ninth rounds were even, Grime outboxing Smith, but the latter landing enough blows to even the score. In the tenth Smith outpunched Grime and won the round and the judge s decision, which was unpopular With the crowd and the newspaper men present. Giime. however, showed the need of further practice and the accompiis iment of more effective defence tactics. The fight was fast and bloodless and very nearly even. -with the consensus ol opinion -apparently favouring Grime.
