WELLINGTON, Aug. IS, In beautifully line weather and in the presence of a big crowd, the Auckland and Wellington representatives met at Athletic Park this afternoon in the first inter-provincial match of the season here. Although the bright sunshine this morning bad proved beneficial, the turf was still rather wetj after the rains during the week. Auckland kicked off against the sun and play opened brightly and at a smart pace. MacKny and Coni an were sent down the line in a line rush but the leather went into touch. Clianey made a good opening in the visitors’ twenty-five and passed to Ramson, but the latter knocked on. Auckland came downfield with a good rush but infringed. Wellington sent the visitors back and after beating the defence, Shearer knocked on a couple of yards from the line. Ramson the next minute, however, opened Wellington’s score with a penalty goal.. Wellington ® Auckland 0 Plav was open and sparkled at times with neat work, but the handling was not always good in the defending line. From a solid rush Wellington was penalised, hut Butler’s kick at goal went astray. There followed a bright piece of play. Coman set the Wellington backs in motion and after MacKenzie and Chaney had handled, Ramson went through to score in a handy position. He failed to convert.’ j Wellington 6 Auckland A Then Linton got away on his own to score under the posts for Jenkin to convert. Wellington 9 Auckland : ° Edgar was injured and was replaced by Claridge. After Ramson failed to goal from an easy position, Chanej made a brilliant opening for Sly to score. Shearer converted. The spell ended. Wellington Auckland ••• ° Auckland opened the second' spell with a. couple of smart dashes, and after these had failed Jamieson came through from the ruck and touched down. The kick was forfeited. Wellington H Auckland 8 Wellington came downfield in a series of loose rushes, and 1 the forwards', exerting pressure, Auckland forced. Auckland was. dangerous when they raced towards the Wellington line 'in a loose rush, ‘but Co man relieved the position hv kicking to touch. There was no slackening of the pace, and Auckland attacked strongly for some minutes, only to be held up by offside play and other infringements. They were unlucky.
