RAILWAY STOCK YARDS

AN ‘ 1 UNO'HFLCIAL ” OPENING

Tlie new stock yards at the Hawera railway station -were first put to use on Saturday afternoon last, when a consignment of dairy cattle from the Southern .end of the district, in charge of Messrs Ash, senior and junior, were unloaded into the yard. Being a Saturday -afternoon quite a few of the “boys” were unoccupied, officially., and naturally took an interest in what was going on and had something to' say in regard to the “occasion.” . The first matter for comment was that at was fitting that |Mr 'Tom Ash, senr., _ who has 'been forwarding and receiving stock at the Hawera station for 3y years, should have Mad the honour of first use of the new yards. Great satisfaction Was also expressed that the guard in charge of the train and thereby It'he official representative of the Railway Department should be the popular Mr Daniel Myers. It. was even suggested that to the genial “Dan” must be given the .credit, in the absence of the member of the district. of having formally opened the new vanls. As there was something contingent upon the acceptance-of this view “Dan” declined the honour with thanks, being quite satisfied with the fact that the opening .ceremony had gone off with more than ordinary eclat in 'that two Irish men had done the job. It has not yet been settled who is to provide the* christening fluid, but the suggestion that, apparently, meets niost favour is that this matter should be referred to the -Chamber of Oommorce. With all the joking put aside, the men who are to use the yard's are agreed that the department has made a good job and earned the gratitude -of those concerned. Air Ash, senr., state's that there are not. better Yards in the North Island and he knows them all from Auckland southwards.
