“CAN BE HELPFUL.”
AIR. SNOWDEN ON TRUSTS. LONDON, July 26. M.i\ Philip Snowden (Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Ramsay MacDonald Labour Government), speaking at University College, London, said that the movement towards amalgamation was not to he thoughtlessly denounced, because anything which tended to eliminate the waste of competition and to increase efficiency was all to the good. “The economic advantages, of a well-managed and soundly-financed trust are very many,” lie added. “On the other hand, there are tremendous dangers in an industrial monopoly, both to the public and the workpeople. “I can see no inherent reason why a trust should treat its workpeople less generously than an individual employer. “The heads of trusts are usually keen business men who realise the economy of high wages and good working conditions. “There is, however, the danger that with trusts Capital and Labour may unite to exploit the consumer by raising prices.”
