WORK IN HARVEST FIELDS.

The rush of unemployed men to enrol lor- harvest work in Canada under tli. 3 Government scheme ixas foe-eii so g.i'eat that up to yesterday evening approximately 25,000 had applied, an-nouiiee-s the Ministry of Labour. Allowing for 'rejections' as the -result of civil and medical examination this number i« sufficient to fill the _ quota of 10,000 required, and accordingly employment exchanges have been instructed to dose their lists to further applicants. The scheme lias been speedily carried out. It was only on August 1 that the Rt. Hon. L. O. M. S. Amery, Secretary for the Dominions, announced in the House of Commons that arrangements had been made with the Canadian Government- whereby 10,000 men were to he assisted to go to Canada, for harvest work. The Canadian Government had expressed a special wish that the alien should he recruited from the mining areas. It appears from the official figures that a large- majority of the applications have in fact come from the distressed- areas of northern England, Scotland -and Wales. Some 3000 of the 10,000 men required will, he already on their way to Canada this week-end. The generally declared intention of the voyagers is to remain in Canada after the harvest if they can find work.
