OHAWE.

(From our own correspondent). During lust week the district experienced three, fairly heavy frosts which caused a check to early potatoes and the grass. . Mr Henare Te Kiri lost by death last week one of his valuable harness horses. It was through strangulation by a tether rope which became caught in one of the shoes. A narrow escape from a coliison between two motor cars occurred last week at one of the cross roads leading toi the Oh awe Beach the prompt action of both drivers preventing what might have been a serious mishap. The attention of the authorities to the hedges in this vicinity and others in the district is required. There have been a few small slips on the Domain cliff facing the sea, leaving in places a dangerous overhang. At present there Is a nice sandy strip on the south end of the beach. Whitebait has made its appearance in the river but in very small quantities.

Miss Ora Sorenson, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. H. Sorenson, Ohawe Beach, who recently passed the final examination at the" 'll awe r a Hospital and accepted a position on the staff of the Timaru Hospital left for that district by the express train to-day. ' The weather being favourable on Friday and Saturday, the fishing launch, Raumiro, was taken out. On Friday the •launch was under the command of Captain Ralia and the following crew : J. Ralia, junior motor engineer), J. Norton, H. Matoe, P. Tonga, A. Ralia, W. Kaapa, J. Ranui, W. Awahou, B. Awahou, K. Kaapa, H. Ranui, Gate. The catch for the day being 47 schnapper, one shark, 2 kawahai, twelve, cod. On Saturday the launch was in. command of Capt. P. Luke and the following crew: J. Ralia (motor engineer), A. Ralia. Gate, W. Kaapa, K. Kaapa, W. Awahou. B. Awahou, Joseph Norton, Palmer (senr.), Mowbray, and H. Whareaitu. The catch for the day comprised 219 shcnapper, one liapuka, two sharks, twelve kawahai, twelve cod. The fish found a ready sale at reasonabel prices in Hawera. The owners of the fishing launch Aorangi are making preparations for the coming season. An up-to-date motor engine has been purchased, and will be fitted in the boat on arrival.
