Mr Ueoi. A. Mills has returned to Hawera on u short business trip and is staying at the Central Hotel. •Mr T'. A. Winks was a passenger by tiie mail train this morning for Wellington, where he attends tho Dairy Board’s meeting on Wednesday. Mr. J. B. Richards, of Stratford, passed: through Hawera by the mail train to-dav on a visit to Wellington. Mr Douglas Dobson, of Oh iistohurch, is at present visiting Hawera, andi cl nr- * ing hi.s stay is a guest at the E/gmont Hotel.
Air Will. Appleton was a through passenger for Wellington toy the mail train this morning. On (reaching New Plymouth from Hawera last Wednesday, Mr Appleton was laid up with an attack of influenza.
There was a large assemblage of fr.a.iids and well-wishers at the Hawera station this morning to bid. farewell to Mrs M. J. and Miss Hood-son, who left by the mail train for Wellington, where they take up their future residence.
Mrs Jaime Young, whose death occurred last Saturday morning, .was a, well-kn own and highly respected resident of the Main awatu district of many years’ stainding. Deceased 1 carves two sons and one daughter to mourn their loss—Messrs J. C. Young, managing director of Hodder and Tolley Ltd., .Tames Young, of Palmerston North, and Mrs W. Fyfe, of Harwera. In view of his appointment to be the Prime Minister’s deputy during Mr. Stanley Baldwin’s absence at Aix les Bains, Lord Hailsham has cancelled •hi.s arrangements for visiting Canada as leader of the delegates from the United Kingdom branch _of the Empire Parliamentary Association to the conference' which opens at Ottawa. at the end of this month,’ and at which all the Empire Parliaments will be represented. Messrs J. Taipp, O. Fry, A. Barnes, C. Heaton, McLaren, Farquahison, and J. Norris, of Dunedin, and Mr Austin, of Christchurch, who have been competing at the cross-country championships in Wanganui, Were motored through to Hawera by Messrs B. H. Westwood (and F. H. Ollerenshaw yesterday and spent the day at Dawson Falls mountain house. The party, who greatly enjoyed the outing, returned by motor* to Wanganui again this morning.
A very enjoyable afternoon was spent at the residence of Mr. J. B. Symmans, “Hill .View,” Eltham, .on Friday, August 3, when several of the relatives and friends gathered to do honour to his mother, the occasion being her 91st birthday. Mrs. Symmans was (with her late husband) one of the pioneer settlers of the Wairnate Plains, settling on the Rama Road. She is also a great lover of flowers, and was a. great worker for the Normanby Horticultural Society in its infancy. The party partook of afternoon tea provided' by the hostess, Mrs. .7. B. Symmans, at which a beautiful birthday cake was cut by the hostess. Heartiest good wishes and congratulations concluded a very pleasant afternoon.
